Esmeralda is very athletic and physically talented. Her caretaker, Clopin, taught her how to street-fight so she could defend herself from the corrupted and prejudicial guards that routinely persecute the Romani people. She's also a gifted dancer and brings in money for herself and for her community by dancing on street corners/at festivals/ etc. in the city of Paris, France. Due to education being accessible only for the rich in Paris, Esmeralda has never been formally educated. Thus she can't read, write or calculate large numbers even though she's very smart.
Her biggest weakness is her tendency to speak before thinking things through due to her temper and her inability to stand by and watch injustice. It's gotten her into trouble numerous times.
She's very compassionate, but she doesn't open up easily to other people. She's very used to caring for others, but is almost confused when others try to take care of her. It's awkward for her, and almost shameful in a way, because she feels like accepting help from others is almost a weakness, even though she would be very quick to deny it's a weakness for other people to ask for help. She's learning how to deconstruct her misconception, but it's a slow learning process.
She's very open when it comes to sexuality. She believes in absolute honesty with her partners, and is always considerate of their feelings. Gender doesn't matter to her much, though she's slightly more often attracted to women. Polyamory and open relationships are fine with her, as are exclusive monogamous relationships. Again, so long as there's open communication and honesty she's fine with almost anything. Cheating and dishonesty are her number one turn-offs.
She flirts more often with men, but she takes her relationships with women much more seriously. She likes trying to make innocents blush and she also enjoys randy repartee.
She accidentally came upon the portal, and due to her curious nature decided to check out what it was. She'd never seen anything like it before and so begins her adventure.
For her history, Frollo was killed (or knocked from power if someone wants him to be alive) as in the Disney tale, but French retribution was swift. The entire army came knocking on Paris' door and Clopin's group of vagabonds couldn't hold them off. Somewhat-ish similar to the play Notre Dame de Paris. Due to the constant threat of oppression she faced in Paris, she deals with PTSD and suffers from anxiety.
