Esmeralda was out for a walk, needing some time to herself to contemplate how to bring up the possibility of a three way relationship with Lonnie, when she reached the town's amphitheater and found it empty. She sat down and laid her head in her hands as she planned out what she was going to say. She'd been sitting for a while when she heard a shout behind her. She jerked her head up as she saw a gang of four young men teaming up against a young girl, and there was little doubt in her mind exactly what they were planning.
Esmeralda cursed when she remembered she'd left the handgun Squall had given her at his home. She drew her knife and prayed they had nothing more dangerous with them, before running over to them and shouting for the other woman to run as she slashed at the man who appeared to be the leader. She swallowed back fear as she quickly ducked the baseball bat that was swung down at her head and sliced at the man's fingers, forcing him to drop the bat. Due to her focus being distracted by the bat, she didn't notice the man swinging at her with brass knuckles until it was too late. She grunted in pain as she fell from the blow to her stomach that knocked the breath from her. She curled into the fetal position as blows rained down on her before the leader called for them to stop. He chuckled as he gripped her by her hair, yanking her to her feet and slamming her into the wall, "I suppose you're offering to be our entertainment instead?" he sneered as he ran his hand up her now bruised and bloody body.

A blade was pressed to the leader's shoulder. Squall had been walking not far down the street when the girl Esmeralda rescued ran into him. Squall got her to talk and after he got the story he left her with a police officer. There was a dark look on his face. "Let her go and I won't kill you." He snarled.

The leader stiffened, before smirking and subtly signaling one of his men to attack Squall from behind, "Such a lovely thing, I'm not so sure I'm able to give her up just yet," he said as the man swung his bat at Squall's head.

Squall put up his arm and caught the bat. There was a soft crunch as he gripped the barrel and a dull ache that told him he broke one of his fingers doing that. He cut off the leader's ear with the tip of his blade. "Let me rephrase that," Squall said. "You will let go of her."

The leader had used the momentary distraction to hold Esmeralda's own knife to her neck, swearing at the pain from Squall's knife at his ear but turning to show Squall his new advantage, "Are you so sure? Besides, she's not exactly struggling to go," he pointed out as Esmeralda remained completely unresponsive to what was happening around her, "Although, it could be that her head hit the wall a bit too hard," he said with a sneer.

Squall wasn't impressed. He pointed the tip of his blade at the leader's head and shot him point blank. Blood splattered on the wall and some splashed across Esmeralda's face.

Esmeralda didn't react at all, slumping down to the ground as the leader's grip on her eased. The other three men stared in horror at their dead friend before making a run for it.

Three shots rang out and each of the thugs fell to the ground dead. He then looked down at Esmeralda. He stayed back in case she thought he was trying to hurt her. "Esmeralda. Esme, look at me. Esmeralda, come back to me." He soothed.

Esmeralda's concussion made it difficult to focus and understand anything going on around her. She backed away from him with what little strength she had, only hearing a muffled male voice, "Please... No more..." she murmured.

He made a soft hushing noise. "I promise. No more." He assured her. "Let's get you to the hospital. Esmeralda, let's get you some help."

Esmeralda stared blankly ahead of her, not really hearing him. She couldn't focus and the pain and disorientation made her nauseous. She started seeing black as her head slumped forward and she passed out.

Squall stiffened. He quickly caught her before lifting her bridal style. He started to carry her to the hospital.

Esmeralda slipped in and out of consciousness, unable to stay awake for any long periods of time. The man with a bat had been particularly vicious after he'd picked it back up, and she could have sworn the leader was wearing steel-toed boots.

Squall took her into the emergency room. What the sight they must have been covered in blood and street grime. "I need a doctor. She was attacked." He said loudly.

The doctors eyed him warily, wondering if he'd been the one to attack her, before bringing over a gurney for to transport her back to a room to be operated on. "Can you give us more information about her injuries?" a nurse asked him.
